英国中学招生面试的常见问题和技巧

忙碌的11+考试季已经进入尾声, 最晚的几所学校也将在1月底前完成英语和数学的笔试。 经历了数月,甚至数年的辛勤努力与备考, 在接下来的几个星期里, 孩子们将陆陆续续地收到阶段性的成果回报-面试通知。  大多数学校是从数百的报名者里挑选成绩优秀的学生里 进行面试的, 而进入面试的学生比例会是前50% 到前30%不等。 所以, 进入面试的同学们, 先恭喜一下, 过关斩将的第一关已经顺利通过了,超越了至少一半的竞争者。

那么下一轮的筛选中, 我们该如何准备面试,在面试环节中稳中求胜,进而脱颖而出呢?毕竟, 即使是在考试中成绩名列前茅,如果面试表现失误,也可能会让孩子与心仪的学校失之交臂。

让我们先了解为什么学校会要求面试, 学校想通过面试考察什么? 学校需要通过面试来了解孩子,考察孩子是否适合他们的学校。到了面试阶段, 考生在学术能力上应该说是不相上下, 或者都达到了学校的要求。 因此, 这个‘适合’更看重的应试以外的能力, 是双方面的契合。一方面孩子是否能达到学校中,包括学术,音乐,体育,艺术以及社会活动等方方面面的要求;另一方面学校对学生的培养方式和理念是否能契合孩子本身的发展特点和期望。举止有礼,热爱学习,善于交流,兴趣广泛是所有学校对学生的基本要求。而仔细研读每个学校的办学宗旨(Vision & Aims) , 可以了解每个学校独特的办学理念和对学生培养的目标的差异及要求。以North London Collegiate School 和St Paul’s Girl school这两个非常学术成绩和教学理念都非常相近的女子学校来举例。NLCS的 ‘proud of our tradition of producing independent minded young women with the drive to make the most of opportunities and a difference in the world.’ 与SPGS的‘Believe in the importance of educating women to fulfil their potential, giving them the skills and confidence to take their place with pride in a modernising and fast-moving world.’ 很明显, 这类学校在能力之外,强调的是独立思考和自知自信。备考这类学校面试, 孩子们需要充分理解并体会这长长两句话中所描述的自信而独立,能力卓绝而适应变化的年轻女士该有怎样的内在涵养和外在言行。

几天的时间里面试几百个孩子,老师只能通过短短的10-20分钟的交流来观察,判断每一个孩子的性格, 爱好和特长。孩子该如何迅速给考官留下良好而深刻的印象呢?总结起来,有不少技巧可以帮助孩子在面试中脱颖而出!

第一点,当然也是最基本的要求:行为举止落落大方, 礼貌而自信。这些都是平时应该积累,养成的好习惯, 临阵磨枪肯定是来不及的。当然面试当天,孩子可能会因为紧张而表现的很拘谨或者言不达意。 为此,记得要稍微提早一些到达面试地点, 给孩子些时间熟悉环境,平静下来。也要让孩子了解,考试时紧张是正常的,不小心答错了,或出现口误等情况的时候,可以大方跟老师承认自己很紧张。面试老师都很有经验的, 会适当提些轻松的话题帮助孩子放松下来。

第二是对可能出现的面试问题做到心中有数。 需要注意的是,孩子需要准备的不是答案本身, 而是表述的方向和方式。比如说,面试问题‘你最喜欢哪个作者,什么书’,答案不能仅止于作者名和书名, 还要能分析解释为什么喜欢。 另外,孩子要找自己真心喜欢的作者,喜欢的书作为答案, 千万不要为了显示内涵或深度去刻意讨好,而违心选择所谓的名人名著。即使孩子喜欢的书是Horrid Henry或其他silly funny book, 只要孩子能清楚而有理的阐述为什么喜欢这个作者或这本书, 那就是好的答案。

第三点是要做到善于聆听老师的引导,敢于提问题。一些学校面试环节的academic assessment会给孩子一幅画作,一段诗句,一道数学题,或者一个puzzle, 不要急着去看,去摆弄, 一定要先听清楚老师的问题, 需要怎么做,做什么。 如果有不清楚或者不理解的地方, 要敢于提问,而老师也会根据你的回答和反应,进一步解释或提出下一个问题或要求。比如说,一幅画,老师的问题是什么,是关于画作内容本身,还是对画中内容的理解,还是画作给观众的感受。当然,如果你碰巧熟悉这副画的历史背景,绘画特点,在回答完老师的问题之后,也是可以扩展开来, 展示你的知识与爱好。如果给出的数学题或者puzzle是你不会,或者不理解的,可以针对自己卡壳的知识点或者步骤,跟老师提问并讨论可能的解决方法。

最后也是最重要的技巧—做自己!想一想,你喜欢什么,热爱什么,什么能让你兴奋雀跃?是沉静的书本,还是呼啸的运动场?是生活中的点点滴滴还是呼朋引伴的热热闹闹,是日新月异科技还是源远流长的艺术,是错综复杂的精彩社会还是波澜壮阔的神奇自然?学校里不需要所有人都是leader,不需要所有人都是音乐神童,不需要所有人都是运动健将,也不需要所有人都能巧言令辩。表现你的特色,展示出你的能力,让老师了解你和认同你, 认可你作为学校的一员以及未来对学校的付出和贡献。

面试结束, 如果你做到了以上几点,那么恭喜你,你的面试成功了!

第一类:关于你自己(包括兴趣爱好,课外活动, 个人能力, 理想与追求等)

What school do you go to / what do you like or not like about it?

What three words would you use to describe yourself?

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Outline your ‘perfect weekend’.

Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Tell me about something you found difficult and what happened.

Tell me about a piece of group work or team work you were involved in.

Imagine you were constructing a tent with some other students and one person was not doing very much.  How would you persuade them to help?

第三类: 逻辑思辨问题

Is being nice to other people important?

If someone attacks you, should you fight back or not?

If you could be anyone for a day who would it be and why?

If you had enough money so that you did not need to work, what would you do?

If you were given £300 (or £3000, or £30000), what would you do with it and why?

If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?

Describe a future invention and how it would affect our lives.

If you were a fruit / animal / instrument, which would you be and why?

Think of as many things as possible that you could do with this pen (or any other object, e.g. paperclip / basket / candle) other than use it as a pen.

If you could save anything from your house (not pets or people), which three things would you take? (Hint: don’t take any electronics.)

Why do you want to apply to school X? What is it about school X that attracts you?

You could be given a poem or piece of writing and then discuss it with the interviewer.

You could be shown a group of pictures and asked which one you like and why.

The Battle of Hastings happened in 1066, it is 2018 now. How many years ago did this war happened?

What time is it half way between 11 0’clock and 3:22?
